IIT-B, the land of innovation

IITB innovators

This year, IIT-Bombay made a surprise appearance in US News & World Report’s list of best colleges. It ranked 36th, six places above IIT-Delhi, making it India’s highest ranked college.

This makes sense as just two years ago, the institute was named the most innovative in India – especially in the fields of biomedicine, communications, computing, energy, and the internet. Let’s take a look at some inventions/innovations to have come out of the college.

Rescue ops get technical
The next time there is a natural calamity in the country, it is likely that the Indian Army will use an IIT-B innovation for rescue operations. Netra, an autonomous hovering Unmanned Ariel Vehicle (UAV), was invented by Ankit Mehta, who is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from the 2005 batch. It is capable of carrying out surveillance and reconnaissance missions for the Army.

Fish out of water
Matsya is the avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu in the form of a fish. So it only makes sense that a bunch of IIT students decided to name their Auto Underwater Vehicle (AUV) after it. The vehicle, which can carry out recon missions at a depth of 150-feet, cost about Rs 12 lakh to make, and has featured at an International RoboSub competition in San Diego

The electric racing car
Because it cares about the environment, IIT Bombay Racing, an independent student organisation comprising 75 students, has created an electric racing car that can go from 0 to 100 kmph in 3.5 seconds, and then achieve its top speed of 111 kmph in a few more. Called Evo 5.0, the car has participated in a “Formula Student” competition held annually at the Silverstone circuit in UK.

The re-write T-shirt
Humming Whale Product Innovations Pvt Ltd, a frontrunner in innovation in Mumbai, was started by Mirik Gogri when he was in his final year at IIT Bombay. The company’s initial product, a re-writable t-shirt, Writongo, is a wacky product that lets you create your own unique t-shirt on which you can write a slogan, and then erase and rewrite when you get bored. The t-shirt was launched with a tremendous positive response and is currently on sale on bewakoof.com.
