जश्न-ए-क़लम: मुंशी प्रेमचंद, अमृतलाल नगर & फणीश्वर नाथ रेणु

Munshi Premchand (1880 -1936) continues to be a mirror to Indian society and its traditions. A socialist, feminist, progressive intellectual much before these terms acquired their modern definitions, he believed in championing the cause of the marginalised through his writing. Greed, dishonesty, cruelty abound in this world, as do kindness, bravery & humour.

Amritlal Nagar (1916 -1990) was a distinguished Hindustani short story writer, novelist, satirist, playwright, screenwriter & journalist. Often cited as the true literary heir of “Premchand”, Amritlal Nagar created his own independent & unique identity as a littérateur and is counted as one of the most i multi-faceted creative writers of Indian literature.

Phanishwar Nath Renu (1921 – 1977) writes of passion spent, hurts unresolved, dreams unfulfilled in the context of a changing world and a crumbling social order. But his work is anything but bleak. Its universities and energy comes from his ability to rise above the human condition and look deep within into the human heart.

JASHN-E-QALAM DRAMATIC READINGS & PERFORMANCES
Literature mirrors Society & Great Writers are Seers of Life! They allow the individual and the collective to reflect on their humanity and sometimes the absence of it. This experience can teach, inspire, make us laugh, or horrify us.

Across time and culture, Oral Storytelling in the form of folklore, mythology & even grandma’s tales have been agents of personal & collective transformation – in part because they change our brains. With the advent of industrialisation and consumerism, visual storytelling i.e. FILM, TV & Advertising has replaced these oral narratives. Imagination & Visualisation are the unfortunate casualties!

Jashn-E-Qalam celebrates the Genius of eminent Litterateurs with Dramatic Readings & Performances of their Notable Works. The common objective is to collectively experience their timeless brilliance and beauty, while using stories as powerful Trojan Horses to provoke mindsets and provide exposure to multiple perspectives. In the process becoming a reason for us to meet, share and most importantly…listen!

We have been performing regularly at small theatres, academic institutions, offices, homes & even public parks! The response has been extremely encouraging with audiences appreciating & relishing the act of actively imagining & co-creating a sensuous experience rather than passively consuming a prepared one.
